The Google PhD Fellowship Program was established to recognize outstanding graduate students doing extraordinary and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields.

Google’s mission is to promote inclusive research communities and encourage people with different backgrounds to apply. They currently offer fellowships in Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, India, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the United States.
Google Africa PhD Fellowship Program Fields of Interest.
Google PhD Fellowship students are a select group recognized by Google researchers and their institutions as some of the most promising young academics in the world. The fellowships are awarded to students who represent the future of research in the following fields:
Algorithms, optimizations and markets
Interaction between human and computer
Machine perception, speech technology and computer vision
Natural language processing (including information retrieval and extraction)
Privacy and security
Programming languages and software engineering
Structured data and database management
Systems and networks
Suitability for Google Africa PhD study program.
Open to full-time graduate students pursuing a doctorate and enrolled at an African institution.
Undergraduate or master’s students and professionals can apply.
Undergraduate and master’s students must currently be full – time students at an African university.
Professionals must be employed by an organization registered in Africa.
For these applicants, the Fellowship Award is contingent upon the award being made within the calendar year of the Fellowship Award for a full-time PhD program of an African University in Computer Science (or an adjoining field), or the award is forfeited. .
Awarding the fellowship does not mean admission to the PhD program of a university. The award recipient must also complete the PhD admission process of the relevant institute / university where they want to register for a PhD.
The award of the bursary is subject to the rules and guidelines that apply in the institute / university where the award registers for the PhD program.
Students must remain full-time enrolled in the PhD program for the duration of the Society or forfeit the award.
Google employees and their spouses, children and members of their household are not eligible. Students already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible.

Evaluation Criteria for Google PhD Fellowships.
Applications are evaluated based on the research proposal, research impact, academic achievement for students and leadership potential.
Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts relevant to Google’s research areas, as well as aspects of robustness and potential impact on the field.
Suggestions should include the direction and plans you are going to work on, in addition to a comprehensive description of the research you are doing.
How to apply for a Google PhD fellowship program.
You will need the following documents to complete an application (in English only):
Student applicant’s CV with links to website and publications (if available)
Short (1 page) CV of the student’s PhD program advisor
Available transcripts (mark sheets) from the first year / semester of the bachelor’s degree to the present
Research proposal (maximum 8 pages)
2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the job of the applicant (at least one of the dissertation advisor for current PhD students)
Applicant’s response (limit of 350 words) to: Describe the desired impact that your research will have on the field and society, and why it is important to you. Include personal, educational and / or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests
