Ten Days, Ten Tips, Day Ten
Oct 24th, 2008 | By Kevin | Category: Writting Articles/tipsOne of the assumptions I’ve made while writing for this site is that most of my readers will be new or at least relatively new to the world of writing. And most, I’m assuming, will not be making a living via their writing.
That been the case I would like to wind up this short series of tips by giving those of you who are interested in writing for profit three suggestions on where to begin writing for money, if you don’t yet have that experience.
Trade publications. These are one of the easiest markets to break into. The magazines are aimed at a fairly narrow range of individuals and the niche is als fairly narrow. Trade publications may not be as glamorous as top of the range consumer magazines but they can produce a steady income and you are learning and building up a CV for when you want to approach the big boys!
Become a non-fiction author. How-to books are incredibly popular. What is a topic that you know a great deal about? What knowledge can you offer based on your life experience? Again, writing about what you know can be a money making opportunity. Write a non-fiction book or an ebook on something you know well.
As part of my non-fiction portfolio I recently published an online Review Site and have just finished a review on Renewable Energy exercises like these can be quite profitable and it is just another way we writers have of making a living.
Travel writing. My first travel article was for a local religious magazine. I had just returned from a trip to the Marian shrine at Lourdes and put together a few photos and a 2000 word article on my experience and how I felt. The editor asked me to pair it down to 1750 words and I received a very nice cheque. It opened the door to travel writing for me and now when I go on holiday I always make sure to take a pen and notepad with me no matter where I go and when I return home I contact a editor I’ve gotten to know and well he pays for half of my holiday!!
Well that’s it. Day ten of ten. I’ve enjoyed writing these articles, it has refreshed my own mind and I truly do hope it has given you some idea. If it does then I’m happy. Before I bring this series to an end I want to give one last word of advice, and it is something I make no apologies for mentioning regularly on this site.
If you want to become a writer then you must write. Write everyday without fail and if you do that then I’ve no doubt persistence will pay.
