Frye Festival Writing Contest

The Great-West Life – London Life Writing Contest provides student authors the opportunity to demonstrate their writing skills.

Prizes are $500 first place, $300 second place, and $100 third place. Participating schools will also receive one ballot per submission (max. 15) to be placed in a draw for a prize of $500 toward the purchase of books. The submission deadline is March 28th, 2008.Submit a 400 to 800 word prose selection on one of the following themes:
Essay: The sellers of “cool”: who and what influences us to perceive certain elements in society as “cool” - and
others not.
Essay: The value of reading and writing. “Wherever illiteracy is a problem, it’s as fundamental a problem as
getting enough to eat or a place to sleep.” - Northrop Frye, The Educated Imagination
Short story: Write a short story featuring Northrop Frye as the main character
Short story: Write a short story (set in your home community) which addresses either the theme of the value of imagination or the issue of illiteracy
Essay: Write a persuasive article evaluating the value of the Frye Festival in the life of local area high school students
Essay: Write a researched tribute to Northrop Frye
Creative writing: write a dialogue between Northrop Frye and an author you admire

Your school can also win!
Participating schools will receive one ballot per
submission (max. 15) to be placed in a draw for a prize
of $500 toward the purchase of books.

English Teachers or SPRs are encouraged to gather all
essays in your classes or at your school by March 19th
and submit only the 15 best essays no later than
4:00 PM on March 28, 2008 to:

All submissions must be 400 to 800 words in
length and be typed and double-spaced:
Create your own title and include a clearly typed
title page indicating the title of your paper, your
name, your school, your grade, your English
teacher, and your home phone number.

Your ‘audience’ is age 14+

Your writing will be assessed on the following
points:

Organization, structure and style
Quality of thought
Grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary
Presentation of document
Adherence to criteria

Entry in this contest indicates the authors give permission to the Frye Festival to publicize/publish the winning
selections and the names, photographs and biographies of the authors.
