For the 14th consecutive year, the School of Nursing and the North Carolina Nurses’ Association (NCNA), District 22, are hosting an evening to honor the profession and its educators beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 in the Burney Center Ballroom. A significant number of registered nurses from the region will be honored for their contributions in practice, education, research and administration. In addition, Outstanding Alumnus and Faculty of the Year awards and scholarship recipients will be announced. This year’s gala is chaired by BJ Ellender, director of cardiac rehab, J Arthur Dosher Memorial Hospital and president, District 22, NCNA.

National Nurses Week is celebrated May 6-12 annually. May 12 is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. “Nurses – Building a Healthy America,” is reflective of the crucial role nurses play in continuing to provide quality and accessible health care even when challenged by the national economic crisis which has left many without jobs and insurance.

States Bettie J. Glenn, associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Nursing, “Nurses are the “glue” holding together the health care system. Nurses continue to provide illness and wellness care for people in need. The complexities and challenges are viewed by nurses as opportunities to re-examine traditional health care practices and generate relevant, evidence-based best practices to increase access to and quality in patient care. Therefore, we celebrate the local nurses who make a difference each day in the lives of many.”

UNCW broke ground on a new nursing building in fall 2008. The facility will house the nursing school’s baccalaureate and graduate programs, including its baccalaureate program in Clinical Research. The building is slated for occupancy in fall 2010.

I cannot be responsible for paying your bills, rent, or for groceries. This is just a side job for a little extra money. If interested please email.

We’re Back!! But first of all a big apology – regular visitors will have noticed that I haven’t been updating the site as regularly as I use to, put it down to family and work commitments. Those little problems are passed me now and everything should be plain sailing from here on in.

Regular readers will also have noticed that look of the site has changed from a pretty standard WordPress layout to a vibrant Magazine Theme – I suppose this is more in keeping with a writer site anyway. Let me give you a brief walk though of how the present site is laid out.

This section that you’re reading now is really the notice board and like any notice board it is designed to draw your attention to a specific issue and like any notice board you can’t really predict what it will show – sometimes it could be a major news story, sometimes a human interest story, sometimes it could be an important message, just like this one. A section which changes as the need arises.

The left hand corner we are keeping primarily for book reviews. They need not necessarily be new releases they are just books which we want to write about for one reason or another. We’ve always wanted to encourage our readers to post in this blog so if you fancy reviewing a book then have a go. Usual restrictions apply, of course, no adult content and while you are most welcome to give a critical review remember there is a libel law. So start reviewing. One final point here, I said at the top of this paragraph that the section was, ‘primarily for book reviews,’ from time to time we will review other things e.g. Sony’s new electronic book reader.

The centre column hosts the last contest that we’ve received information about for the next three months: e.g. Dec. Jan, and Feb. It also leads you into the last post for our ‘writing articles/tips’ section and our ‘resource’ section. Again they’ll display the latest post in that particular section.

Moving on the right column here’s where you will get a complete listing of all current writing contests that we know about – organized on a monthly basis.

The archives, as you can guess will let you know what we’ve been on about since adopting a blog outlay.

From time to time we’ve written articles that we fell you might like to visit on a regular basis, you’ll find them in our pages section.

One final word – well maybe two, this is a new outlay for our site so don’t be to surprised if over the next few weeks things change slightly. And finally we really would appreciate posts from you – feel free to post.

Kevin

Are you like me do you receive loads and loads of Spam – unwanted, unsolicited emails often trying to flog ‘personal services. Well I think I’ve found a solution and best of all it is absoloutly free!

About a month back I received, wait for it over 700 spam emails in the one day. 400 at one sitting and 300 at another – not I have to be honest and say that was a one off. Normally I would receive anywhere in the region of between 20-30 in the day, and that’s part of the price you pay if your email address is out there on that big network we call the world wide web.

Well you can guess I was pretty mad with my ISP, who I have to say was not particularly helpful and I was almost changing my ISP to another firm all that kept me back was the fact that I have a number of other websites and blogs and I didn’t want the hassle of changing them all over.

For those of you who don’t live in the UK “Which?” is the largest and the most respected consumer association in the UK and I subscribe to a number of their publications, including “Computing Which?” Well about a week back I received my monthly copy and they carried a recommendation for a third party spam filter called 0spam (that’s zero) which was completely free. I’ve been trying it, teaching it what’s Spam and what is not Spam and it is now stopping almost 100 of the spam I was receiving on a regular basis.

If you are haveing Spam problems I suggest you try it. It is completely free – no catches. Here’s the link 0SPAM

I’m over the moon about a new site I’m developing at the moment it’s called Worldwide Infomedia Services.

Like the name says it’s an information service and basically I carry out reviews on products. At the moment they are all reviews of digital products, ie. products you can download right away.

Christmas is just around the corner and many parents will be looking out for presents to buy for their children. One of the most popular presents this year is likely to be a laptop computer. Great fun to write on, great fun to read from, but parents and guardians have to be careful. That’s why I carried out a review on a product called PC Tattletale; it is a parental control software, which inessence means you can watch every keystroke and see every password that your child enters into the computer. It is a surefire way of making sure they don’t stumble across undesirable sites online.

If your child has a computer, if you are thinking of getting one then I highly recommend PC Tattletale, it will certainly lift a weight from your shoulders

A UK online creative writing competition, created by greenmetropolis.com to encourage reading, writing and recycling.

Entrants (children, teens and adult age categories) submit work to be voted on, and at the end of each month the winning entry becomes the next chapter of a book, which will be published in December 2008, with all proceeds going to The Woodland Trust.

The Green Story is a creative writing competition, where each month you can read the previous chapters and then write what you think the next chapter should be by submitting your own entry, or read and then vote on the latest entries.

So whether you see yourself as a reader or writer, you can take part in creating and shaping the Green Story. Just remember it’s your story, you decide how it goes!

There are adult, teen and children’s versions of the story and each story must have a ‘green’ theme which encourages all readers, young and old, to think about how we can best look after the environment.

The competition will run for 10 months to create a book with 10 chapters and then be published as ‘The Green Story’ book at the end of the year.

Each chapter must be written in the third person, rather than ‘first person’ viewpoint and should follow on from the previous winning chapter.
