From next month, poetry lovers on the Shetland Islands will be able to read the best of locally written verse while on the public loo!

The project is being headed by Jen Hadfield, the Shetland-based poet who was last month awarded the prestigious TS Eliot prize for poetry for Nigh-No-Place, her second book of poetry written in Shetland.

Ms Hadfield yesterday appealed to local poets to submit poems for the competition. Six of the best entries will be chosen every three months.

The Bards in the Bog competition is being launched by the islands’ Poet Partner project, a three-year initiative to promote poetry in the community, involving the Scottish Poetry Library, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Shetland Arts and the Shetland Library.

We’re Back!! But first of all a big apology – regular visitors will have noticed that I haven’t been updating the site as regularly as I use to, put it down to family and work commitments. Those little problems are passed me now and everything should be plain sailing from here on in.

Regular readers will also have noticed that look of the site has changed from a pretty standard WordPress layout to a vibrant Magazine Theme – I suppose this is more in keeping with a writer site anyway. Let me give you a brief walk though of how the present site is laid out.

This section that you’re reading now is really the notice board and like any notice board it is designed to draw your attention to a specific issue and like any notice board you can’t really predict what it will show – sometimes it could be a major news story, sometimes a human interest story, sometimes it could be an important message, just like this one. A section which changes as the need arises.

The left hand corner we are keeping primarily for book reviews. They need not necessarily be new releases they are just books which we want to write about for one reason or another. We’ve always wanted to encourage our readers to post in this blog so if you fancy reviewing a book then have a go. Usual restrictions apply, of course, no adult content and while you are most welcome to give a critical review remember there is a libel law. So start reviewing. One final point here, I said at the top of this paragraph that the section was, ‘primarily for book reviews,’ from time to time we will review other things e.g. Sony’s new electronic book reader.

The centre column hosts the last contest that we’ve received information about for the next three months: e.g. Dec. Jan, and Feb. It also leads you into the last post for our ‘writing articles/tips’ section and our ‘resource’ section. Again they’ll display the latest post in that particular section.

Moving on the right column here’s where you will get a complete listing of all current writing contests that we know about – organized on a monthly basis.

The archives, as you can guess will let you know what we’ve been on about since adopting a blog outlay.

From time to time we’ve written articles that we fell you might like to visit on a regular basis, you’ll find them in our pages section.

One final word – well maybe two, this is a new outlay for our site so don’t be to surprised if over the next few weeks things change slightly. And finally we really would appreciate posts from you – feel free to post.

Kevin

Are you like me do you receive loads and loads of Spam – unwanted, unsolicited emails often trying to flog ‘personal services. Well I think I’ve found a solution and best of all it is absoloutly free!

About a month back I received, wait for it over 700 spam emails in the one day. 400 at one sitting and 300 at another – not I have to be honest and say that was a one off. Normally I would receive anywhere in the region of between 20-30 in the day, and that’s part of the price you pay if your email address is out there on that big network we call the world wide web.

Well you can guess I was pretty mad with my ISP, who I have to say was not particularly helpful and I was almost changing my ISP to another firm all that kept me back was the fact that I have a number of other websites and blogs and I didn’t want the hassle of changing them all over.

For those of you who don’t live in the UK “Which?” is the largest and the most respected consumer association in the UK and I subscribe to a number of their publications, including “Computing Which?” Well about a week back I received my monthly copy and they carried a recommendation for a third party spam filter called 0spam (that’s zero) which was completely free. I’ve been trying it, teaching it what’s Spam and what is not Spam and it is now stopping almost 100 of the spam I was receiving on a regular basis.

If you are haveing Spam problems I suggest you try it. It is completely free – no catches. Here’s the link 0SPAM
